Louis Armstrong, conhecido pelos apelidos «Satchmo» e «Pops», foi um trompetista e cantor americano, uma das figuras mais influentes da história do jazz. Nascido e criado em Nova Orleans, iniciou a carreira no final da década de 1910 tocando cornetim em bandas de metais e em barcos fluviais, até chamar a atenção de seu mentor King Oliver e integrar sua banda em Chicago, onde conviveu com outros pioneiros como Hoagy Carmichael e sua primeira esposa, Lil Hardin Armstrong.
Ao mudar-se para Nova York em meados dos anos 1920 para tocar com a Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, Armstrong trocou o cornetim pelo trompete e desenvolveu o estilo emotivo e improvisacional que definiria o solo de jazz por gerações, além de ser pioneiro do scat como vocalista. À frente de suas próprias bandas desde meados dos anos 1920, tornou-se uma voz definidora do jazz inicial e, mais tarde, da canção popular americana em geral.
A fase final de sua carreira trouxe sucesso amplo com gravações vocais calorosas e imediatamente reconhecíveis, como «What a Wonderful World», «Hello, Dolly!» e «La Vie en Rose», ao lado de standards perenes como «When the Saints Go Marching In». Com sua voz rouca, trompete virtuoso e carisma cênico irreprimível, Armstrong tornou-se um dos músicos americanos mais amados e reconhecidos do século XX, moldando o jazz, o pop e a performance vocal muito além de seu próprio gênero.
