Louis Armstrong, apodado «Satchmo» y «Pops», fue un trompetista y cantante estadounidense, una de las figuras más influyentes en la historia del jazz. Nacido y criado en Nueva Orleans, comenzó su carrera a finales de la década de 1910 tocando la corneta en bandas de metales y en barcos fluviales, hasta llamar la atención de su mentor King Oliver y unirse a su banda en Chicago, donde se relacionó con otros pioneros como Hoagy Carmichael y su primera esposa, Lil Hardin Armstrong.
Tras mudarse a Nueva York a mediados de los años veinte para tocar con la Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, Armstrong cambió la corneta por la trompeta y desarrolló el estilo emotivo e improvisador que definiría el solo de jazz durante generaciones, además de ser pionero del scat como vocalista. Al frente de sus propias bandas desde mediados de los años veinte, se convirtió en una voz definitoria del jazz temprano y, más tarde, de la canción popular estadounidense en general.
La etapa final de su carrera le trajo un éxito masivo con grabaciones vocales cálidas e inmediatamente reconocibles como «What a Wonderful World», «Hello, Dolly!» y «La Vie en Rose», junto a estándares perdurables como «When the Saints Go Marching In». Gracias a su voz rasposa, su trompeta virtuosa y su desbordante carisma escénico, Armstrong se convirtió en uno de los músicos estadounidenses más queridos y reconocidos del siglo XX, marcando el jazz, el pop y la interpretación vocal mucho más allá de su propio género.
