About the artist
Louis Armstrong, nicknamed «Satchmo» and «Pops», was an American trumpeter, singer and one of the most influential figures in the history of jazz. Born and raised in New Orleans, he began his career in the late 1910s playing cornet in brass bands and on riverboats, eventually catching the attention of mentor King Oliver and joining his Chicago-based band, where he mixed with fellow pioneers like Hoagy Carmichael and his first wife Lil Hardin Armstrong.
After moving to New York in the mid-1920s to play with the Fletcher Henderson Orchestra, Armstrong switched from cornet to trumpet and developed the emotionally expressive, improvisational style that would define jazz soloing for generations, while also pioneering scat singing as a vocalist. Leading his own bands from the mid-1920s onward, he became a defining voice of early jazz and, later, of American popular song more broadly.
His later career brought him mainstream crossover success with warm, instantly recognizable vocal recordings like «What a Wonderful World», «Hello, Dolly!» and «La Vie en Rose», alongside enduring standards such as «When the Saints Go Marching In». Through his gravelly voice, virtuosic trumpet playing and irrepressible showmanship, Armstrong became one of the most beloved and widely recognized American musicians of the 20th century, shaping jazz, pop and vocal performance far beyond his own genre.
