He emerged anonymously in 2011 with a trio of atmospheric, darkly seductive mixtapes—House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence—later compiled as Trilogy, which established his blend of alternative R&B, hazy production, and confessional, often nihilistic lyricism about excess, fame, and loneliness.
