Abel Tesfaye, conhecido como The Weeknd, é um cantor, compositor e produtor canadense de Scarborough, Ontário, nascido em 16 de fevereiro de 1990. Surgiu de forma anônima em 2011 com uma trilogia de mixtapes atmosféricos e sombriamente sedutores — House of Balloons, Thursday e Echoes of Silence —, depois reunidos em Trilogy, que consolidou sua mistura de R&B alternativo, produção nebulosa e letras confessionais, muitas vezes niilistas, sobre excessos, fama e solidão.
Seu som evoluiu de um R&B melancólico e ambiental para um synth-pop brilhante com influência dos anos 1980 em Beauty Behind the Madness (2015) e Starboy (2016), cuja faixa-título, produzida pelo Daft Punk, marcou uma adoção mais plena de texturas dance e pop.
