Sobre o artista
Gorillaz é uma banda virtual criada em 1998 por Damon Albarn, vocalista do Blur, e pelo artista Jamie Hewlett, cocriador dos quadrinhos Tank Girl. O projeto apresenta quatro personagens animados — 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle e Russel Hobbs — como o rosto público da música, enquanto Albarn é o único colaborador musical constante ao lado de um elenco rotativo de coautores e produtores.
Musicalmente, o Gorillaz transita entre rock alternativo, hip-hop, dub, eletrônica e pop, apoiado em samples empoeirados, linhas de baixo sinuosas e melodias melancólicas de Albarn. O álbum de estreia (2001) e o single «Clint Eastwood» estabeleceram um som nebuloso e mesclado, enquanto «Demon Days» (2005), com faixas como «Feel Good Inc.» e «DARE», levou o projeto a um território mais sombrio e ambicioso. Álbuns posteriores como «Plastic Beach» e «Humanz» aprofundaram as colaborações, reunindo uma enorme gama de vocalistas e produtores convidados do pop, rap e eletrônica.
Sua identidade visual é indissociável da música: cada álbum desenrola uma narrativa solta envolvendo os quatro personagens animados, contada por meio de clipes e curtas de animação. Essa fusão de animação, sátira à cultura da mídia e uma composição estilisticamente inquieta tornou o Gorillaz um dos projetos mais distintos e comercialmente bem-sucedidos a borrar a linha entre música e arte visual.
