About the artist
Gorillaz is a virtual band created in 1998 by Damon Albarn, frontman of Blur, and artist Jamie Hewlett, co-creator of the comic Tank Girl. The project presents four animated characters — 2-D, Murdoc Niccals, Noodle, and Russel Hobbs — as the public face of the music, while Albarn serves as the only constant musical contributor behind the scenes, working alongside a rotating cast of collaborators and producers.
Musically, Gorillaz range across alternative rock, hip-hop, dub, electronic and pop, often built around dusty samples, warped basslines and Albarn's melancholic vocal melodies. Their self-titled debut (2001) and its breakout single «Clint Eastwood» established a hazy, genre-blending sound, while «Demon Days» (2005) pushed the project into darker, more ambitious territory with tracks like «Feel Good Inc.» and «DARE». Later albums such as «Plastic Beach» and «Humanz» leaned further into collaboration, pulling in a huge range of guest vocalists and producers from across pop, rap and electronic music.
The band's visual identity is inseparable from its music: each album unfolds around a loose narrative involving the four cartoon members, told through music videos and animated shorts. This fusion of animation, satire of media culture, and stylistically restless songwriting has made Gorillaz one of the most distinctive and commercially successful acts to blur the line between music and visual art.
