About the artist
Queen formed in London in 1970, with the classic line-up of Freddie Mercury on lead vocals and piano, Brian May on lead guitar, Roger Taylor on drums, and John Deacon on bass. All four members contributed songwriting, giving the band an unusually varied catalogue that ranged from progressive rock experimentation to glam, vaudeville and arena anthems. Their early work produced the hit «Killer Queen», but it was 1975's «Bohemian Rhapsody» that transformed them into global superstars, staying at number one on the UK charts for nine weeks with its operatic structure and theatrical ambition.
Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Queen became pioneers of what would be called stadium rock, crafting communal, singalong anthems such as «We Will Rock You», «We Are the Champions» and «Don't Stop Me Now», while also experimenting with disco on «Another One Bites the Dust» and synth-driven sounds on «Radio Ga Ga». Mercury's flamboyant showmanship and vocal range, paired with May's distinctive guitar tone, defined the band's live performances, most famously their set at Live Aid in 1985.
Songs like «Somebody to Love» and «Love of My Life» showcased their range from gospel-tinged rock to tender balladry. Freddie Mercury's death in 1991 marked the end of the classic era, but Queen's catalogue, later dramatized in the musical We Will Rock You and the biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, remains among the most enduring in rock history.
