4 Non Blondes

4 Non Blondes were an American rock band formed in San Francisco in 1989, fronted by singer-guitarist Linda Perry alongside bassist Christa Hillhouse. The band built a devoted local following before signing with Interscope Records and releasing their only studio album, Bigger, Better, Faster, More!, in 1992.

The album is best remembered for «What’s Up?», an anthemic rock ballad built around Perry’s distinctive raspy, powerful vocals, which became a massive international hit — topping charts in multiple countries and reaching the top 40 in the US and UK. Its yearning, defiant lyrics about searching for meaning and screaming into the world resonated broadly and turned the song into an enduring alt-rock and pop-culture staple, still widely covered and referenced decades later.

Despite the success of «What’s Up?» and other tracks like «Spaceman» and «Dear Mr. President», internal tensions led the band to split in 1997. Linda Perry went on to become one of pop and rock’s most sought-after songwriters and producers, but 4 Non Blondes remains a touchstone of early-90s alternative rock, remembered for its raw energy and one unforgettable anthem.
