Sobre o artista
The Cure se formou em Crawley, na Inglaterra, em 1976, em torno da composicao do guitarrista e vocalista Robert Smith. Comecando como uma banda proxima ao punk, foi empurrada pela gravadora rumo ao pop em seus primeiros discos, ate que Smith a conduziu a um territorio mais sombrio e atmosferico apos tocar com o Siouxsie and the Banshees, culminando na intensidade pesada de Pornography (1982).
Em vez de se separar, o grupo virou para um pop mais luminoso e ecletico, atingindo seu pico comercial com o album duplo Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me (1987). Incomodado com o rotulo de banda gotica, Smith continuou empurrando o som em novas direcoes, e em 1989, com Disintegration, criou o que muitos consideram a obra-prima da banda: exuberante, melancolica e meticulosamente construida.
O som caracteristico do The Cure combina guitarras cristalinas, baixos com chorus, sintetizadores e o vocal distinto e melancolico de Smith, transitando com fluidez entre o post-punk sombrio e o pop efervescente. Musicas como «Lovesong», «Just Like Heaven», «Friday Im in Love» e «Boys Dont Cry» tornaram a banda uma das que uniram o alternativo ao mainstream, com influencia que se estende ao shoegaze, ao indie rock e a subcultura gotica.
