About the artist
The Cure formed in Crawley, England, in 1976, built around the songwriting of guitarist and vocalist Robert Smith. Starting as a punk-adjacent act, the band was pushed toward pop by their early label before Smith steered them into darker, more atmospheric territory following a stint playing alongside Siouxsie and the Banshees, culminating in the bleak intensity of 1982s Pornography.
Rather than splitting apart, the group pivoted toward brighter, more eclectic pop, reaching a commercial peak with 1987s double album Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me. Smith, uncomfortable being pigeonholed as a gothic act, kept pushing the sound in new directions, and by 1989s Disintegration he had crafted what is widely regarded as the bands masterpiece: lush, melancholic, and meticulously layered.
The Cures signature sound blends jangly guitars, chorus-heavy basslines, synthesizers, and Smiths distinctive, plaintive vocals, moving fluidly between gloomy post-punk and effervescent pop. Songs like «Lovesong», «Just Like Heaven», «Friday Im in Love», and «Boys Dont Cry» made them one of the defining bands to bridge alternative and mainstream audiences, and their influence stretches across shoegaze, indie rock, and goth subculture alike.
