Sobre o artista
David Bowie (1947–2016), nascido David Robert Jones em Brixton, Londres, foi uma das figuras mais influentes e em constante reinvenção da história da música popular. Ao longo de uma carreira de cinco décadas, mudou continuamente de persona, gênero e identidade visual, passando de seus começos no folk-rock ao alter ego glam-rock Ziggy Stardust, pelo soul, a experimental Trilogia de Berlim, a new wave e além, sempre à frente das tendências vigentes.
Seu grande avanço veio com «Space Oddity» em 1969, cuja história do astronauta fictício Major Tom capturou a imaginação pública em meio ao pouso da Apollo na Lua. O álbum de 1972 The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars o tornou uma estrela global, seguido por obras aclamadas como Hunky Dory, Low e «Heroes», estas duas últimas produzidas com Brian Eno e Tony Visconti durante seu célebre período berlinense, e Let's Dance nos anos 1980, que lhe trouxe sucesso pop de massa com faixas como a título e «Modern Love».
A imagem andrógina de Bowie e sua experimentação de gêneros sem medo o tornaram uma influência definidora para o glam, o art rock, a new wave e gerações posteriores de artistas pop e rock. Ele permaneceu artisticamente inquieto até o fim, lançando seu álbum final, ★ (Blackstar), poucos dias antes de sua morte em 2016, uma obra amplamente interpretada como uma despedida deliberada.
