About the artist
The Smashing Pumpkins are an American alternative rock band formed in Chicago, Illinois. Fronted by guitarist and vocalist Billy Corgan, the group also featured guitarist James Iha, bassist D'arcy Wretzky, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlin in its classic lineup. Though they emerged during the grunge era, the band's sound diverged sharply from the genre's stripped-down aesthetic, favoring dense, layered guitar textures, orchestral ambition, and a wide emotional range that stretched from aggressive hard rock to delicate, introspective balladry.
Their breakthrough came with Siamese Dream, followed by the sprawling double album Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, which cemented their status as one of the defining rock acts of the 1990s. The more experimental Adore explored electronic textures and a quieter, more melancholic direction. Corgan's guitar virtuosity and his lyrics, oscillating between raw anger and vulnerable self-reflection, became a signature of the band's identity.
Despite numerous lineup changes and periods of hiatus over three decades, Corgan has remained the band's constant creative force, continuing to release new material and tour with various incarnations of the group. The Smashing Pumpkins are widely regarded as one of the most influential and enduring rock bands to emerge from the 1990s alternative scene.
