About the artist
T. Rex began in 1967 as Tyrannosaurus Rex, a psychedelic folk duo formed by singer-songwriter and guitarist Marc Bolan with percussionist Steve Peregrin Took. Bolan's whimsical, fantasy-inflected lyrics, drawing on high fantasy and mythology, paired with acoustic guitar and hand percussion, earned the group a devoted following in the British underground and the support of DJ John Peel.
After Took left and was replaced by Mickey Finn in 1969, the band shortened its name to T. Rex and shifted toward electric instrumentation, becoming one of the pioneering acts of British glam rock. Bolan's charismatic persona, glittery image and simplified, hook-driven songwriting fueled a run of major UK hits including «Ride a White Swan», «Hot Love», «Get It On (Bang a Gong)», «Jeepster» and «Children of the Revolution».
T. Rex's success sparked the phenomenon known as «T. Rextasy» in the UK in the early 1970s and helped establish the template for glam rock later expanded upon by artists such as David Bowie and Slade. Marc Bolan remained the band's central creative force throughout its various lineups until his death in 1977.
