About the artist
Swans are an American experimental rock band formed in New York City in 1982, led throughout their history by singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter Michael Gira. Emerging from the city’s no-wave and industrial underground, the band built an early reputation for punishing volume and abrasive noise, with their first albums, including «Filth», aiming to deliver some of the harshest sound imaginable in a live setting.
Over the following decades Swans repeatedly reinvented themselves, moving from the gothic-tinged intensity of «Children of God» into more melodic, atmospheric territory on albums like «White Light from the Mouth of Infinity», before culminating in the sprawling post-rock and tape-loop soundscapes of «Soundtracks for the Blind», widely regarded as their creative peak. The band disbanded for a period before Gira revived the project, leading to a celebrated resurgence in the 2010s with dense, hypnotic, and epic-length compositions.
With more than thirty musicians passing through its ranks over nearly four decades, Swans stand as one of the most uncompromising and influential acts in experimental and noise rock, admired for their refusal to settle into a single sound and for Gira’s relentless creative direction across each distinct era.
