Ritchie Valens

Ritchie Valens, born Richard Steven Valenzuela, was an American singer, songwriter and guitarist who became one of the first Latino rock and roll stars, despite a career that lasted only about eight months before his death. Born and raised in the Pacoima area of Los Angeles, he grew up immersed in both American rock and roll and traditional Mexican music, a blend that would define his brief but influential output.

His signature achievement was «La Bamba», a rock and roll reworking of a traditional Mexican folk song sung in Spanish, which became a groundbreaking crossover hit and remains one of the most recognizable songs in rock history. Other recordings such as «Come On, Let's Go» and the tender ballad «Donna», written for his girlfriend, further showcased his range between raw rock energy and heartfelt balladry.

Valens died on February 3, 1959, in the plane crash that also killed Buddy Holly and The Big Bopper, an event later immortalized as «The Day the Music Died» in Don McLean's «American Pie». His life and premature death were dramatized in the 1987 film La Bamba, which introduced his music to new generations and cemented his legacy as a pioneering figure who opened doors for Latino artists in American popular music.
