About the artist
Pink Floyd are an English rock band formed in London in 1965 by Syd Barrett (guitar, vocals), Nick Mason (drums), Roger Waters (bass), and Richard Wright (keyboards), later joined by David Gilmour on guitar and vocals. Their name was taken from two American blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, whom Barrett admired. The band became pioneers of psychedelic and progressive rock, known for extended instrumental passages, conceptual songwriting, elaborate live productions, and philosophical, often melancholic lyrical themes.
After Barrett's departure in 1968 due to mental health struggles, Gilmour took over guitar duties and Waters gradually became the band's primary lyricist and conceptual driving force. This lineup produced the band's most celebrated work, including Dark Side of the Moon (1973), one of the best-selling and most influential albums in rock history, followed by Wish You Were Here (1975) and Animals (1977). Songs like «Comfortably Numb», «Money», «Time», and «Another Brick in the Wall, Pt. 2» remain touchstones of the genre, combining Gilmour's expressive guitar work with atmospheric production and socially conscious or introspective lyrics.
Internal tensions, particularly around Waters' growing creative control, eventually led to lineup changes and Waters' own departure in the 1980s, though the band continued without him for a time. Pink Floyd's influence on rock, progressive music, and album-oriented artistry remains foundational, and their catalog continues to shape how bands approach concept albums and large-scale live performance.
