About the artist
Peter Gabriel, born February 13, 1950 in England, is a singer, songwriter, producer and activist who first rose to prominence as the original lead vocalist of Genesis, fronting the band's theatrical progressive rock era from 1967 to 1975 across albums such as «Trespass», «Nursery Cryme», «Foxtrot» and «The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway», known for elaborate stage costumes and storytelling.
After leaving Genesis, Gabriel launched a solo career defined by a series of four self-titled albums, gradually moving from art-rock experimentation toward worldbeat, electronic textures and socially conscious songwriting. His 1980 album introduced groundbreaking use of the gated reverb drum sound, while 1986's «So» brought him mainstream global success with singles like «Sledgehammer», «In Your Eyes», «Don't Give Up» (a duet with Kate Bush) and «Big Time».
Gabriel has long been a pioneer of world music, co-founding WOMAD and the Real World Records label to champion artists from outside the Western mainstream. He has also been an outspoken human rights activist, with songs like «Biko» addressing apartheid-era South Africa. His restless blending of rock, electronic production and global musical traditions has made him one of the most influential and genre-defying artists to emerge from the British progressive rock scene.
