About the artist
Nine Inch Nails is the project of American musician Trent Reznor, formed in Cleveland, Ohio, in the late 1980s. Initially a solo vehicle for Reznor with rotating live musicians, it became one of the most influential forces in industrial rock, fusing aggressive electronic textures, distorted guitars, and confessional, often nihilistic lyricism. The 1989 debut Pretty Hate Machine and the 1994 landmark The Downward Spiral, featuring «Closer» and «Hurt», brought industrial music into the mainstream and shaped the sound of alternative rock throughout the decade.
Reznor’s meticulous production style and willingness to blend abrasive noise with melodic songcraft set Nine Inch Nails apart, influencing countless artists across rock, metal, and electronic genres. Albums like The Fragile and With Teeth reached the top of the US charts, while Johnny Cash’s cover of «Hurt» introduced the song to an entirely new audience. Atticus Ross, a longtime collaborator, became an official member in 2016, deepening the project’s cinematic and textural ambitions.
Beyond the band, Reznor and Ross have won Academy Awards for film scoring, and Nine Inch Nails has received multiple Grammy Awards. The project remains a touchstone for its uncompromising sonic experimentation, emotional intensity, and enduring influence on how electronic and rock music intersect.
