Nine Inch Nails é o projeto do músico americano Trent Reznor, formado em Cleveland, Ohio, no final dos anos 1980. Inicialmente um veículo solo com músicos rotativos ao vivo, tornou-se uma das forças mais influentes do rock industrial, fundindo texturas eletrônicas agressivas, guitarras distorcidas e letras confessionais, muitas vezes niilistas. O álbum de estreia Pretty Hate Machine, de 1989, e o marcante The Downward Spiral, de 1994, com «Closer» e «Hurt», levaram o industrial ao mainstream e moldaram o som do rock alternativo daquela década.
O estilo de produção meticuloso de Reznor e sua disposição em misturar ruído áspero com composições melódicas distinguiram Nine Inch Nails, influenciando incontáveis artistas do rock, metal e música eletrônica. Álbuns como The Fragile e With Teeth chegaram ao topo das paradas americanas, enquanto a versão de «Hurt» por Johnny Cash apresentou a canção a um público inteiramente novo. Atticus Ross, colaborador de longa data, tornou-se membro oficial em 2016, aprofundando as ambições cinematográficas e texturais do projeto.
