Nine Inch Nails es el proyecto del músico estadounidense Trent Reznor, formado en Cleveland, Ohio, a finales de los años 80. Inicialmente un vehículo solista con músicos rotativos en directo, se convirtió en una de las fuerzas más influyentes del rock industrial, fusionando texturas electrónicas agresivas, guitarras distorsionadas y letras confesionales, a menudo nihilistas. El debut de 1989, Pretty Hate Machine, y el histórico The Downward Spiral de 1994, con «Closer» y «Hurt», llevaron el industrial al mainstream y marcaron el sonido del rock alternativo durante esa década.
