Modest Mouse is an American indie rock band formed in 1992 in Issaquah, Washington, built around singer, guitarist and lyricist Isaac Brock. The group emerged from the Pacific Northwest indie scene of the 1990s alongside labels like Up Records and K Records, developing a jittery, angular guitar sound paired with Brock's yelping, philosophical vocal delivery. Early records such as «This Is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About» and «The Lonesome Crowded West» built a devoted underground following before the band signed to a major label.
The band's commercial breakthrough came with 2004's «Good News for People Who Love Bad News», which produced the hit «Float On» and brought Modest Mouse into the mainstream while retaining their idiosyncratic, restless songwriting. The lineup has shifted considerably over the decades, with Isaac Brock the sole constant member; a notable era saw former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr join the band, contributing to the album «We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank».
