About the artist
Manic Street Preachers are a Welsh rock band formed in 1986 in Blackwood, Wales, originally a quartet of James Dean Bradfield, Nicky Wire, Richey Edwards and Sean Moore. They emerged from the late-1980s Welsh valleys with a fiercely political, glam-and-punk-inflected sound and a reputation for incendiary live shows and provocative statements, positioning themselves against the Britpop mainstream of the early 1990s.
Their early albums built a cult following, but it was the stark, harrowing The Holy Bible (1994) that cemented their critical reputation. In February 1995, guitarist and lyricist Richey Edwards disappeared and has never been found; the band continued as a trio, with Nicky Wire taking over as principal lyricist. The follow-up, Everything Must Go (1996), marked a dramatic shift toward anthemic, orchestral rock and became their commercial breakthrough, yielding hits like «A Design for Life» and «If You Tolerate This Your Children Will Be Next».
Across subsequent decades the band has continued to evolve while retaining its literate, socially engaged songwriting, exploring themes of history, class and memory on albums such as This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours and Journal for Plague Lovers, the latter built from Edwards' unused lyrics. Manic Street Preachers remain one of the most enduring and respected bands to emerge from the UK alternative scene of the 1990s.
