About the artist
Dream Theater are an American progressive rock and metal band formed in 1985 on Long Island, New York, originally under the name Majesty, by guitarist John Petrucci, bassist John Myung, and drummer Mike Portnoy. Alongside longtime keyboardist Jordan Rudess and vocalist James LaBrie, the band became widely regarded as one of the defining acts of progressive metal, known for intricate compositions, extended song structures, and virtuosic musicianship.
The band achieved a rare mainstream breakthrough with «Pull Me Under» from their 1992 album Images and Words, a rock radio hit that remains unusual for a genre typically confined to niche audiences. Later works such as the concept album Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory, and the sprawling title track «Octavarium», showcase their ambition for long-form storytelling and genre-blending, incorporating elements of classical music, jazz fusion, and hard rock.
Mike Portnoy departed in 2010 and was replaced by drummer Mike Mangini, marking a significant lineup shift after 25 years with the same core rhythm section. Dream Theater's members are celebrated instrumentalists individually, frequently recognized in music instruction and gear publications, and the band's catalog is considered foundational listening within progressive metal for its technical depth and emotional scope.
