Dream Theater es una banda estadounidense de rock y metal progresivo formada en 1985 en Long Island, Nueva York, originalmente bajo el nombre Majesty, por el guitarrista John Petrucci, el bajista John Myung y el baterista Mike Portnoy. Junto al tecladista de larga trayectoria Jordan Rudess y el vocalista James LaBrie, la banda se convirtió en una de las agrupaciones definitorias del metal progresivo, conocida por composiciones intrincadas, estructuras extensas y un virtuosismo instrumental notable.
Lograron un raro éxito comercial con «Pull Me Under», del álbum Images and Words de 1992, un tema que llegó a la radio rock, algo inusual para un género generalmente confinado a públicos de nicho. Obras posteriores como el álbum conceptual Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory y la extensa pieza titular «Octavarium» muestran su ambición narrativa a gran escala y su fusión de géneros, incorporando elementos de música clásica, jazz fusión y hard rock.
Mike Portnoy dejó la banda en 2010 y fue reemplazado por el baterista Mike Mangini, un cambio significativo tras 25 años con la misma sección rítmica.
