Dream Theater é uma banda americana de rock e metal progressivo formada em 1985 em Long Island, Nova York, originalmente sob o nome Majesty, pelo guitarrista John Petrucci, o baixista John Myung e o baterista Mike Portnoy. Junto ao tecladista de longa data Jordan Rudess e ao vocalista James LaBrie, a banda se tornou uma das definidoras do metal progressivo, conhecida por composições intrincadas, estruturas de músicas extensas e virtuosismo instrumental.
A banda alcançou um raro sucesso mainstream com «Pull Me Under», do álbum Images and Words de 1992, um hit de rádio rock incomum para um gênero geralmente restrito a públicos de nicho. Trabalhos posteriores, como o álbum conceitual Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory e a extensa faixa-título «Octavarium», mostram sua ambição narrativa de longo formato e fusão de gêneros, incorporando elementos de música clássica, jazz fusion e hard rock.
Mike Portnoy deixou a banda em 2010 e foi substituído pelo baterista Mike Mangini, uma mudança significativa após 25 anos com a mesma seção rítmica.
