About the artist
Coldplay are a British rock band formed in London in 1996–1997 by University College London classmates Chris Martin (vocals, piano, guitar), Jonny Buckland (guitar), Guy Berryman (bass) and Will Champion (drums). After early name changes, they settled on Coldplay and released their debut album, Parachutes, in 2000, which drew comparisons to Radiohead but established Martin's melodic, emotionally direct songwriting as the band's core strength.
Their sound matured with A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), widely seen as more musically and lyrically sophisticated, and songs like «The Scientist», «Yellow» and «Clocks» became staples of 2000s rock radio. The band's fourth album, Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), marked a significant stylistic shift under producer Brian Eno, incorporating more orchestral and experimental textures, and yielded the title track «Viva La Vida», one of their signature hits.
In later years Coldplay leaned further into pop, electronic and even dance-influenced territory, with songs like «A Sky Full of Stars» and «Hymn for the Weekend» reflecting collaborations and production choices that broadened their audience well beyond rock listeners. Alongside anthemic ballads such as «Fix You», this evolution has made Coldplay one of the most commercially successful and widely recognized rock bands of the 21st century.
