About the artist
Chicago is an American rock band formed in 1967 in Chicago, Illinois, originally under the name Chicago Transit Authority before shortening it to avoid a legal dispute. The group distinguished itself from the start with a horn-driven rock sound, blending elements of jazz, R&B, and classical influences with rock songwriting, an approach that was unusual among rock bands of the era.
Founding members included keyboardist Robert Lamm, guitarist Terry Kath, trumpeter Lee Loughnane, trombonist James Pankow, saxophonist Walter Parazaider, and drummer Danny Seraphine, with the band's numbered albums becoming a distinctive branding device across their long discography. Early hits such as «Beginnings», «25 or 6 to 4», and «Saturday in the Park» showcased their brass-heavy arrangements and tight musicianship.
Following the death of guitarist Terry Kath in the late 1970s, Chicago shifted toward a smoother, ballad-oriented pop-rock sound in the 1980s, scoring major hits like «If You Leave Me Now», «Hard to Say I'm Sorry», and «You're the Inspiration», often with producer David Foster shaping their more polished, radio-friendly direction. Despite lineup changes over the decades, Chicago has remained active for over fifty years, recognized as one of the best-selling American bands and a rare example of a rock act successfully sustaining a horn section as a core identity.
