Whitney Houston, nacida en Newark, Nueva Jersey, en 1963, fue una de las vocalistas más celebradas de la música popular, reconocida por su poderosa voz de mezzosoprano y su capacidad para moverse con fluidez entre el R&B, el pop y el gospel. Criada en una familia inmersa en la música gospel y soul, con su madre Cissy Houston y su prima Dionne Warwick entre sus influencias, aportó una potencia vocal de raíz eclesiástica al pop mainstream.
Firmada por Clive Davis en Arista Records, su álbum debut homónimo de 1985 la convirtió al instante en una superestrella, y le siguieron una serie de álbumes y sencillos que dominaron las listas a finales de los ochenta y durante los noventa, incluyendo «How Will I Know», «Greatest Love of All», «I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)» y «Saving All My Love for You».
