About the artist
Whitney Houston, born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1963, was one of the most celebrated vocalists in popular music, renowned for her powerful mezzo-soprano voice and her ability to move fluidly between R&B, pop and gospel. Raised in a family steeped in gospel and soul music, with mother Cissy Houston and cousin Dionne Warwick among her influences, she brought a church-rooted vocal power to mainstream pop.
Signed to Arista Records by Clive Davis, her self-titled 1985 debut album made her an instant superstar, and she followed it with a run of albums and singles that dominated the charts throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, including «How Will I Know», «Greatest Love of All», «I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)» and «Saving All My Love for You». Her rendition of «I Will Always Love You», recorded for the film The Bodyguard, in which she also starred, became one of the best-selling singles of all time.
Houston's technical control, emotional phrasing and vocal range set a standard that influenced generations of singers across R&B and pop. Beyond her chart success, she helped open doors for Black women in mainstream pop and film, and songs like «I Have Nothing» and «I'm Every Woman» remain touchstones of vocal performance in popular music.
