Whitney Houston, nascida em Newark, Nova Jersey, em 1963, foi uma das vocalistas mais celebradas da música popular, reconhecida por sua poderosa voz de mezzo-soprano e por sua capacidade de transitar fluentemente entre R&B, pop e gospel. Criada em uma família imersa na música gospel e soul, com a mãe Cissy Houston e a prima Dionne Warwick entre suas influências, ela trouxe uma potência vocal de raiz eclesiástica ao pop mainstream.
