Tom Lehrer

Tom Lehrer (1928–2025) was an American singer-songwriter, satirist, pianist, and mathematician, celebrated for witty, dark-humored songs that skewered politics, science, and social conventions. A Harvard-educated mathematician who also taught mathematics and musical theater, Lehrer brought an academic precision to his lyrics, pairing intricate wordplay with deceptively cheerful, old-fashioned musical settings drawn from musical theater and parlor song traditions.

He first gained a cult following through self-recorded, self-distributed albums sold largely by word of mouth, blending the macabre («Poisoning Pigeons in the Park», «We Will All Go Together When We Go»), the scientific («The Elements», set to Gilbert and Sullivan’s «Major-General’s Song»), and pointed political satire («Wernher von Braun», «National Brotherhood Week»). His songs often used a cheerful melodic surface to deliver savage or absurdist commentary, a contrast that became his signature.

Lehrer largely stepped back from performing by the 1970s, devoting himself to teaching mathematics, but his relatively small catalogue has had an outsized influence on satirical songwriting and novelty music, inspiring generations of comedic and parody musicians.
