About the artist
The National formed in 1999 when five friends from Cincinnati, Ohio, found themselves living near one another in Brooklyn's Carroll Gardens. The lineup settled around singer Matt Berninger, guitarist/multi-instrumentalist brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner, and rhythm section brothers Scott and Bryan Devendorf, a configuration that has remained remarkably stable across two decades.
Their sound is built on Berninger's low, brooding baritone and literate, often oblique lyrics, set against the Dessners' intricate guitar work and orchestral arrangements and Bryan Devendorf's distinctive, propulsive drumming. Albums like «Boxer» (2007) and «High Violet» (2010) established them as one of indie rock's most acclaimed acts, with songs such as «Bloodbuzz Ohio», «Pink Rabbits» and «I Need My Girl» showcasing their blend of melancholy and slow-burning intensity.
The band has also become known for high-profile collaborations, including work with Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and a memorable rendition of «The Rains of Castamere» for the Game of Thrones soundtrack. Later records like «Sleep Well Beast» and «I Am Easy to Find» pushed further into electronic textures and expanded vocal collaborations, cementing The National's reputation for restless creative evolution while staying rooted in mood, restraint and emotional weight.
