About the artist
The Grateful Dead formed in 1965 in Palo Alto, California, out of the fertile counterculture of the San Francisco Bay Area, evolving from an earlier jug-band lineup into a rock outfit fronted by guitarist and vocalist Jerry Garcia. Alongside bassist Phil Lesh, rhythm guitarist Bob Weir, keyboardist Ron «Pigpen» McKernan, and drummer Bill Kreutzmann, the band became house musicians of sorts for Ken Kesey's Acid Tests, and their music absorbed the free-form, psychedelic spirit of that scene from the very beginning.
Rather than chase radio hits, the Dead built their reputation on marathon live shows where songs stretched into extended improvisational jams, drawing from blues, folk, bluegrass, country, and jazz in a constantly shifting blend that made no two performances alike. This approach effectively created the template for what later became known as the jam band genre, and it produced a trading culture around bootleg tapes that predated and anticipated much of today's fan-driven music sharing.
Songs like «Truckin'», «Ripple», «Friend of the Devil», and «Uncle John's Band» became staples of American rock songwriting, even as the band's studio output remained secondary to their reputation as a touring institution. Their devoted following, the Deadheads, turned Dead shows into a nomadic subculture unto itself. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994, cementing a legacy built less on chart success than on the sheer scale and loyalty of the community they created.
