Sobre o artista
The Grateful Dead se formaram em 1965 em Palo Alto, Califórnia, em meio à efervescente contracultura da região da baía de San Francisco, evoluindo de uma formação anterior de jug-band para um grupo de rock liderado pelo guitarrista e vocalista Jerry Garcia. Ao lado do baixista Phil Lesh, do guitarrista base Bob Weir, do tecladista Ron «Pigpen» McKernan e do baterista Bill Kreutzmann, a banda tornou-se praticamente a banda residente dos Acid Tests de Ken Kesey, e sua música absorveu desde o início o espírito livre e psicodélico daquela cena.
Em vez de perseguir sucessos de rádio, os Dead construíram sua reputação em shows maratônicos nos quais as músicas se estendiam em longas improvisações, incorporando blues, folk, bluegrass, country e jazz numa mistura em constante mudança que fazia com que nenhum show fosse igual a outro. Essa abordagem criou, na prática, o modelo do que depois seria chamado de gênero jam band, e gerou uma cultura de troca de gravações piratas que antecipou o compartilhamento musical impulsionado por fãs de hoje.
Músicas como «Truckin'», «Ripple», «Friend of the Devil» e «Uncle John's Band» tornaram-se pilares da composição do rock americano, ainda que a produção de estúdio da banda sempre tenha ficado em segundo plano diante de sua fama como instituição itinerante. Seus seguidores devotos, os Deadheads, transformaram os shows da banda numa subcultura nômade própria. A banda foi introduzida no Rock and Roll Hall of Fame em 1994, um legado construído menos sobre sucesso nas paradas do que sobre a escala e a lealdade da comunidade que criaram.
