About the artist
PJ Harvey, born Polly Jean Harvey in Yeovil, England, is one of British rock's most restless and acclaimed artists, the only performer to win the Mercury Prize twice. She began her professional career in 1991 fronting the eponymous trio PJ Harvey before going solo after two albums, and has spent over three decades reinventing her sound with almost every release rather than settling into a fixed style.
A skilled multi-instrumentalist who plays guitar, bass, keyboards, saxophone, violin, cello, and drums, Harvey moved from the raw, confrontational blues-punk of early records like «Rid of Me» and «Dry» through the more polished, radio-facing sound of «To Bring You My Love» and «Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea», into darker, more experimental territory on albums such as «Is This Desire?» and «White Chalk». Songs like «Down by the Water», «This Mess We're In», «Good Fortune», «The Wheel», and «Man-Size» showcase her range across these eras, from stark, menacing minimalism to lush, cinematic production.
Harvey's work is marked by unflinching, often theatrical lyricism, an appetite for reinvention, and collaborations with producers and musicians including Nick Cave and John Parish. Her influence runs deep across alternative and art rock, and her refusal to repeat herself has made her a defining figure of British music since the early 1990s.
