About the artist

Pete Seeger (3 May 1919 – 27 January 2014) was an American folk singer, banjoist, and activist born in New York City into a musical family; his father, Charles Seeger, was a prominent musicologist. A protégé of Woody Guthrie, Seeger became one of the central figures of American folk music, playing 12-string guitar and a distinctive long-necked five-string banjo of his own design, and cultivating a warm, participatory performing style built around audience sing-alongs.

Seeger founded the Almanac Singers in 1940 and later joined The Weavers in 1949, achieving mainstream popularity before the group was blacklisted during the anti-communist Red Scare of the 1950s after Seeger and others were named before Congress. He rebuilt his career through the 1960s as a solo artist and songwriter, becoming closely tied to the Civil Rights Movement, the peace movement, and environmental causes, popularizing songs including «We Shall Overcome», «If I Had a Hammer», «Where Have All the Flowers Gone?», «Guantanamera», and «Which Side Are You On?».

Seeger’s influence extended across folk and popular music alike, inspiring generations of singer-songwriters through his blend of topical protest songs, children’s music, and traditional material. He remained an active performer and activist into his nineties, continuing to advocate for social justice and environmental preservation, notably the cleanup of the Hudson River, until his death in 2014.
