Louis Prima

Louis Prima (1910–1978) was an Italian American singer, trumpeter, songwriter and bandleader born in New Orleans, a city whose brass-band and early jazz traditions shaped his entire career. He came up playing trumpet in the New Orleans jazz scene before moving to New York in the 1930s, where he led small swing combos and wrote songs, including the standard «Sing, Sing, Sing», later made famous by Benny Goodman's orchestra.

Prima's most celebrated period came in the 1950s in Las Vegas, where, alongside his wife and singing partner Keely Smith and saxophonist Sam Butera and the Witnesses, he built a high-energy lounge act that fused swing, jump blues and Italian American novelty songs. His medley «Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody» became one of his signature recordings, and songs like «Buona Sera» and «Angelina» drew on his Sicilian-American heritage. His showmanship and vocal style, full of scat singing and comic energy, made him a defining figure of the Vegas entertainment era.

Later in his career Prima reached an entirely new audience by voicing King Louie and performing «I Wan'na Be Like You» in Disney's 1967 animated film «The Jungle Book», a role that introduced his sound to generations who never saw him perform live. His music remains a touchstone for swing revival acts and is still widely heard through that Disney legacy.
