Grover Washington Jr.

Grover Washington Jr. was an American saxophonist widely regarded as one of the founding figures of smooth jazz and a key architect of the crossover sound that blended jazz improvisation with soul, funk, and R&B. Born in Buffalo, New York, he came up through gospel and jazz backgrounds before establishing himself as a session and solo artist in the early 1970s, playing soprano, alto, and especially tenor saxophone with a warm, immediately recognizable tone.

Washington's biggest commercial breakthrough came with «Just the Two of Us», a 1980 duet with singer Bill Withers that became a radio staple and one of the most enduring soul-jazz love songs ever recorded. Across his career he released a long string of albums that balanced instrumental jazz musicianship with accessible, groove-oriented arrangements, helping bring jazz saxophone to mainstream pop and R&B audiences without abandoning improvisational depth.

His catalog includes tracks like «Winelight», the album from which «Just the Two of Us» came, along with numerous instrumentals such as «Mystical Force», «Jamaica», and «Brand New Age» that showcase his fluency across funk, Latin, and traditional jazz idioms. Washington's influence extended well beyond his own recordings: his fusion of technical jazz skill with radio-friendly songcraft shaped the smooth jazz genre for decades and made him one of the most sampled and covered saxophonists in popular music.
