Fred Astaire

Fred Astaire, born Frederick Austerlitz in 1899 in Omaha, Nebraska, to a family of German and Austrian immigrants, became one of the twentieth century's most influential dancers and entertainers. He began performing as a child in a vaudeville double act with his sister Adele, and their partnership carried them to Broadway, where a young George Gershwin became a close collaborator and helped shape several of their hit musicals. After Adele's retirement in 1932, Astaire moved to Hollywood and joined RKO Studios, where his pairing with Ginger Rogers produced a string of glamorous, tightly choreographed musical films that defined the genre through the 1930s.

Astaire's style favored elegance, precision, and apparent effortlessness rather than athletic showmanship. He insisted on filming dance numbers in long, uninterrupted takes with the full body in frame, a demand that showcased genuine skill rather than editing tricks and set a new technical standard for how dance was captured on screen. His musicality extended to singing as well, and songwriters such as Gershwin, Irving Berlin, and Cole Porter wrote some of their most enduring standards with his phrasing in mind, including songs like «Cheek to Cheek» and «Let’s Face the Music and Dance».

After leaving RKO in 1939 and briefly retiring in 1946, Astaire returned to films in 1948, stepping in for an injured Gene Kelly in Easter Parade, which launched a productive second career at MGM. His combined mastery of dance, film craft, and popular song left a lasting imprint on both cinema and American musical theater, and his interpretations of Gershwin and Berlin songs remain touchstones of the Great American Songbook.
