Five Stairsteps

The Five Stairsteps were an American family soul group from Chicago, formed in the mid-1960s by five of the Burke siblings — Alohe Jean, Clarence Jr., James, Dennis and Kenneth «Keni» — often billed as the First Family of Soul. Their name came from the way the children lined up in age, and their close family harmonies became the group's defining trait, backed by producer and family friend Curtis Mayfield's Chicago soul sensibility in their early records.

Signed initially to Curtom-adjacent Chicago labels and later to Buddah Records, the group blended sweet, gospel-rooted vocal harmony with the lush strings and rhythmic pulse typical of late-1960s soul. Their biggest success came with «O-o-h Child» in 1970, a warm, hopeful anthem that became a defining song of its era and has been repeatedly covered and sampled by later generations of musicians.

Though they never matched that single's crossover impact again, the Five Stairsteps left behind a catalog of tightly harmonized soul and pop songs recorded as a genuine family act, a rarity even within the Motown-adjacent Chicago soul scene. Youngest sibling Cubie occasionally appeared with the group as a young child, adding to their image as a literal family band, and their legacy endures largely through the enduring popularity of their signature hit.
