Daniel Johnston

Daniel Johnston was an American singer-songwriter and visual artist from West Virginia, based for much of his career in Austin, Texas, whose deeply personal, lo-fi recordings made him one of the most influential outsider musicians of his generation. He began distributing homemade cassette tapes in the early 1980s, handing them out to strangers and coworkers while introducing himself as someone who would one day be famous, a prophecy that gradually came true within underground music circles.

Johnston's songs, often recorded on a simple boombox with piano, chord organ, or guitar, combined childlike melodies and unfiltered emotional directness with recurring themes of love, faith, good versus evil, and his own struggles with mental illness, including periods of psychosis that led to hospitalization. Albums such as «Hi, How Are You» and «Yip/Jump Music» became touchstones of the lo-fi and outsider art movements, prized for their raw honesty rather than technical polish. His distinctive cartoon artwork, especially the recurring «Jeremiah the Innocent» frog character, became nearly as iconic as his music.

His profile rose dramatically after Nirvana's Kurt Cobain repeatedly praised him in interviews and wore a «Hi, How Are You» T-shirt, drawing major-label interest despite Johnston's own ambivalence and health struggles. Songs like «True Love Will Find You in the End» and «Devil Town» have since been covered by numerous artists, cementing his legacy as a singular voice bridging naive folk art and confessional songwriting.
