About the artist

Crass were a British anarchist art collective and band formed in 1977 in Essex, England, built around Penny Rimbaud and Steve Ignorant. Emerging from the punk explosion but deliberately positioned outside its commercial machinery, Crass fused confrontational, sloganeering lyrics with stark black-and-white aesthetics, a self-run label, and a genuinely lived anarchist and pacifist politics — treating the band as a vehicle for direct action as much as music.

Their records, including «The Feeding of the 5000» and «Penis Envy», paired abrasive, fast, minimalist punk with spoken-word passages and tape collage, delivered in alternating male and female vocals that gave the songs a jarring, sermon-like intensity. Songs such as «Do They Owe Us a Living?», «Banned from the Roxy» and «Punk Is Dead» attacked both the establishment and punk's own co-optation by the music industry, cementing Crass as the founding voice of anarcho-punk and a direct influence on the crust punk and DIY hardcore scenes that followed.

Worn down by years of state harassment, a costly obscenity prosecution tied to «Penis Envy», and internal exhaustion, the group disbanded in 1984, closing with the ambient «Ten Notes on a Summer's Day» in 1986. Decades on, Crass remain a touchstone for punk's political wing, cited as a formative influence by countless anarcho and hardcore bands.
