About the artist
Billy Bragg is an English singer-songwriter born in 1957 in Barking, Essex, known for fusing punk energy with folk songwriting and explicitly left-wing politics. He came up through the late-1970s punk scene, forming the short-lived band Riff Raff, before reinventing himself as a solo performer armed mainly with an electric guitar and a barking, unmistakably English voice, a format that became his signature.
His breakthrough came with albums like Life’s a Riot with Spy vs Spy and Talking with the Taxman about Poetry, which produced the hit «A New England» and pushed songs such as «Between the Wars» into the UK charts. His music blends punk directness, folk tradition, and pointed social commentary, and he became closely associated with union and labor movement anthems like «There Is Power in a Union» and «The World Turned Upside Down». He also collaborated with American band Wilco on the Mermaid Avenue albums, setting unpublished Woody Guthrie lyrics to new music, which produced songs including «California Stars».
Bragg helped organize the Red Wedge collective supporting the Labour Party in the 1980s and has remained a vocal figure in British left politics for decades, later expressing support for other parties before returning to Labour. His work sits at the intersection of protest song, folk-punk, and British political songwriting.
