About the artist
Astrud Gilberto (1940–2023) was a Brazilian singer born in Salvador, Bahia, who became one of the most recognizable voices of the Bossa Nova movement. She rose to international fame almost by accident in 1963, when she was invited to sing the English-language verse on «The Girl From Ipanema» during the recording sessions for the album Getz/Gilberto with her then-husband João Gilberto and American saxophonist Stan Getz. Her soft, understated delivery, sung in lightly accented English, became the defining sound of the track and helped introduce Bossa Nova to a mass American and European audience.
Following that breakthrough, Gilberto built a long solo career blending Bossa Nova with jazz, and later R&B and pop textures, working with artists such as Chico Buarque, Gil Evans, and Antônio Carlos Jobim, whose compositions — including «Água de Beber» and «How Insensitive» — became staples of her repertoire. Her intimate, conversational vocal style, free of theatrical ornamentation, set a template for how Bossa Nova vocals would be interpreted outside Brazil.
She continued recording and touring for decades, remaining a key ambassador of Brazilian music abroad. Songs like «(So Nice) Summer Samba» and «One Note Samba» cemented her status as an essential interpreter of the genre, and her influence can be heard in generations of singers who followed the smooth, whispery Bossa Nova vocal tradition she helped define on the world stage.
