The Notorious B.I.G., nascido Christopher Wallace em 21 de maio de 1972, no Brooklyn, Nova York, é considerado um dos maiores rappers da história do hip-hop. Como Biggie Smalls, foi descoberto por meio de uma fita demo e apareceu na coluna «Unsigned Hype» da The Source em 1992, chamando a atenção de Sean Combs, que o contratou para a Bad Boy Records. Seu álbum de estreia, «Ready to Die» (1994), redefiniu o hip-hop da Costa Leste, combinando narrativas de rua vívidas com refrões radiofônicos em faixas como «Juicy» e «Big Poppa».
A ascensão de Biggie coincidiu com a rivalidade entre a Costa Leste e a Costa Oeste em meados dos anos 1990, que definiu uma era do hip-hop, e ele se tornou uma de suas figuras mais visíveis. Seu álbum duplo póstumo «Life After Death», lançado em 1997 poucas semanas após seu assassinato em Los Angeles aos 24 anos, gerou grandes sucessos como «Hypnotize» e «Mo' Money, Mo' Problems» e permanece um dos álbuns de rap mais vendidos de todos os tempos.
Celebrado por seus densos esquemas de rima multissilábica, cadência fluida e narrativa cinematográfica em faixas como «Warning», «Suicidal Thoughts» e «Ten Crack Commandments», a influência de Biggie se estende por gerações de rappers. Apesar de uma discografia com apenas dois álbuns de estúdio, seu impacto na lírica e no som do hip-hop dos anos 1990 permanece fundamental.
