The Notorious B.I.G., nacido Christopher Wallace el 21 de mayo de 1972 en Brooklyn, Nueva York, es considerado uno de los mejores raperos de la historia del hip-hop. Bajo el nombre de Biggie Smalls, fue descubierto gracias a una maqueta y apareció en la columna «Unsigned Hype» de The Source en 1992, lo que llamó la atención de Sean Combs, quien lo fichó para Bad Boy Records. Su álbum debut de 1994, «Ready to Die», redefinió el hip-hop de la Costa Este, combinando relatos callejeros vívidos con ganchos radiofónicos en temas como «Juicy» y «Big Poppa».
Su ascenso coincidió con la rivalidad entre la Costa Este y la Costa Oeste de mediados de los noventa, que definió una época del hip-hop, y se convirtió en una de sus figuras más visibles.
