About the artist
The Notorious B.I.G., born Christopher Wallace on May 21, 1972, in Brooklyn, New York, is widely regarded as one of the greatest rappers in hip-hop history. Rapping first as Biggie Smalls, he was discovered through a demo tape and landed in The Source's «Unsigned Hype» column in 1992, catching the attention of Sean Combs, who signed him to Bad Boy Records. His 1994 debut album «Ready to Die» redefined East Coast hip-hop, blending vivid, novelistic street narratives with radio-ready hooks on tracks like «Juicy» and «Big Poppa».
Biggie's rise coincided with the mid-1990s East Coast–West Coast rivalry that came to define an era of hip-hop, and he became one of its most visible figures. His posthumous double album «Life After Death», released in 1997 just weeks after his murder in Los Angeles at age 24, produced huge hits including «Hypnotize» and «Mo' Money, Mo' Problems» and remains one of the best-selling rap albums of all time.
Celebrated for his dense multisyllabic rhyme schemes, effortless cadence and cinematic storytelling on songs like «Warning», «Suicidal Thoughts» and «Ten Crack Commandments», Biggie's influence extends across generations of rappers. Despite a discography built from only two studio albums, his impact on lyricism, flow and the sound of 1990s hip-hop remains foundational.
