Panic! at the Disco foi formada em 2004 em Las Vegas, Nevada, por Ryan Ross, Spencer Smith, Brent Wilson e Brendon Urie, tornando-se o primeiro grupo assinado pela gravadora Decaydance de Pete Wentz. Seu álbum de estreia de 2005, A Fever You Can't Sweat Out, fundiu a energia do pop-punk com toques teatrais de cabaré e elementos eletrônicos glitch, gerando o sucesso «I Write Sins Not Tragedies», vencedor de Vídeo do Ano no MTV VMA de 2006.
A banda passou por mudanças significativas de formação ao longo dos anos, até restar Brendon Urie como único membro constante e força criativa, com o som do projeto mudando drasticamente entre álbuns, do pop barroco experimental de Pretty. Odd. ao exagero glam e dance-pop de Death of a Bachelor, que incluiu a faixa-título e «Emperor's New Clothes».
