Wilco

Wilco is an American rock band formed in Chicago in 1994 out of the breakup of the alt-country group Uncle Tupelo, led by singer, guitarist, and primary songwriter Jeff Tweedy. Over three decades the band has evolved from its roots in alt-country toward a more expansive, experimental sound, becoming one of the defining American rock acts of its era.

The band's breakthrough came with 2002's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, an album whose fraught, delayed release became emblematic of the tension between art and commerce in the music industry; it paired Tweedy's plainspoken, melancholic songwriting with dense, noise-inflected production from Jim O'Rourke. Songs like «Jesus, Etc.», «I Am Trying to Break Your Heart», and «Heavy Metal Drummer» showed a band willing to fracture pop songcraft with dissonance and studio experimentation while still writing deeply melodic, emotionally direct material.

Wilco's lineup has shifted considerably over the years, with Tweedy and bassist John Stirratt the only members present throughout, later joined by drummer Glenn Kotche, multi-instrumentalist Mikael Jorgensen, guitarist Nels Cline, and keyboardist Pat Sansone. Cline's arrival brought a jazz-informed, improvisational edge to the band's guitar work, heard on tracks like «Impossible Germany» and «Via Chicago», cementing Wilco's reputation as a band as comfortable with noise and dissonance as with straightforward Americana songwriting.
